All About Oil Spills

 Kia Ora Team

Some ways to clean up oil are using absorbers such as hay, straw, booms,  and hair.  The boom contains the absorbent and is used straight away to try to limit the spread of the oil.

Some other ways to clean up oil are burning the oil in situ. However, the smoke can also have an impact on the environment.  Dispersants can also be used.  Dispersants speed up the process of breaking down the oil and this then goes into the water.

We simulated this by using vegetable oil in water, with food colouring to simulate the chemicals in the oil that we tried to clean up with cotton as our boom, and materials such as tissue paper and kitchen roll for absorbers. We then use dishwashing liquid to simulate the dispersant.

What we noticed was that the dishwashing liquid (dispersant), broke up the oil, but it was much more difficult to contain. Here is my video of my adobe spark that I made:

Has you city ever had a oil spill ?
